I chose to pick the trend on new billboards. The ones that have got my attention are the Solar powerd ones and the one that are equiped with tiny cameras that gather details about passers-by — their gender, approximate age and how long they looked at the billboard.

Digital Billboards

Digital billboards are now the new way to advertise your business. Billboard companies are adopting digital technology that rotates advertising images every six to eight seconds. It is to better catch the eye of the consumer. Although the ads are not made to move, they are very similar to television screens. Digital billboards are growing rapidly there are currently about 400 digital signs around the country. According to Outdoor Advertising Association of America, within the next ten years there will be approximately 10,000 digital billboards across the country. Digital technology has been around for awhile, but the exciting thing is how billboards are being brought into this process and that they will allow companies to generate 3 to 5 times more money in advertising.
Clear Channel Outdoor and Lamar Advertising are the two main companies that create digital technology in billboards and believe that it is the best way to get your consumers to pay attention. Billboard critiques said that roughly 450,000 billboards are scattered along highways and local roads. However, billboards are not just seen on roadsides anymore. They’re popping up on subways and busses, shopping malls, office buildings and airports. Billboard industries are saying that digital signs are not dangerous, driving researchers say there is not enough research to know for sure because they are mainly towards cell phones. They are tracking awareness however to see if digital signs will cause problems with drivers.
Lamar Advertising is converting about 28 traditional billboards to digital signs each month. They have over 158,000 billboards which they are not planning on all going digital, but only to the ones in the most trafficked areas. The positive on digital advertising is how companies can save money and in this economy they are looking for ways to do just that. Advertisers can buy a spot for a single day or even just a few hours, rather than weeks at a time like with a traditional billboard. According to Jodi Senese, executive vice president of marketing for CBS Outdoor states digital signs offer “immense creativity, flexibility, and targetablility for different demographics, which was really never an option for out-of-the-home advertising.”
